A Mineral Moon from your photo, in seconds

A Mineral Moon is a photo of the Moon with enhanced colours that show differences in the composition of its surface. Bluish areas are rich in titanium, while orange and purple areas contain less titanium and iron. The tool brings out the colours already present in the uploaded photo - it does not paint anything in.

Questions

What is a Mineral Moon?

A photo of the Moon with enhanced colours that show differences in the composition of its surface. Bluish areas are rich in titanium, while orange and purple areas contain less titanium and iron. The colours are real but very faint, so the eye does not see them through a telescope.

Is the tool free?

Yes. It needs no account and no installation - it runs in a web browser.

Which photo gives the best result?

A stacked colour image of the Moon in FITS or 16-bit TIFF, for example from a Seestar. JPEG and PNG files work too, but they hold less colour information, so the tool smooths the colour more.

Can I use a video of the Moon?

The tool takes a finished, stacked image. A video has to be stacked first, for example in the Seestar or in stacking software.

Is my photo uploaded anywhere?

No. All processing happens in the browser on your device, at full resolution. Only the settings are remembered in the browser: language, framing, caption and logo.

Does it work on a phone?

Yes. The preview stays at the top of the screen while you adjust the sliders below it.
